Although the bride does not traditionally take part in the formal
speeches, if you want to be more than just a pretty dress and add
a few words of your own, then the best time to do it is after your
groom or the best man. More and more brides choose to add a personal
speech and this can be a great way to mop up any forgotten thank you's.
You will find below a selection of potential lines to start you on
your way!
"I feel like a winner on Oscar night there are so many people
to thank. I just want to reiterate all the thanks that have gone on
before - Mum and Dad, you've been great, as have my new in-laws. Thanks
to Bob and Vikki who've helped us to hold this wedding together and
all of you for just being here - especially that noisy group in the
corner who grew up with me and remember how much I said I'd never
get married. But, most of all, I'd like to thank John for asking me
to marry him and then going through with it!
You've all been so kind saying how nice I look but I just wanted to
say how gorgeous John looks today in his suit. You're great, darling.
I know you all want to get back to the Champagne so I'll leave you
to it but thanks so much for being here and making our day so special.
I'd like you all to raise your glasses and drink a toast . . . to
friends and family."
We're gathered here today to watch John agree to a lifetime's worth
of housework and pampering! I thought about reading a poem but I couldn't
find any which came anywhere near as happy as I am today with my closest
friends and family around me to see me marry the man I love.
Thank you.
Please join me in a toast . . . to love and friendship.
"This is the best day of my life but it is also very difficult.
I am so happy to be marrying John but I miss Dad very much. He died
over a year ago but I miss him more today than I ever have. This would
have been his special day as well. He would have been so proud to
walk me down the aisle and it wouldn't have felt right if anyone else
had been there for me.
But I am also happy - as Dad would have wanted me to be. I am marrying
the man I love and I hope that we will always have the love we have
today and be as happy as our parents.
John, thank you for supporting me through rough times as well as happy
ones and thank you for today - I love you."
"I just wanted to say how much I wish Dad were here to enjoy
this day as much as we have and to embarrass me with memories best
left forgotten. I know that, wherever he is, he is looking down on
us and smiling and I want to thank Uncle Paul for walking me down
the aisle.
You've all made me so happy just by being here and I can't believe
Don and Mary, my old flatmate from uni, came all the way over from
America - you're brilliant.
Mostly I'd like to thank John just for asking - although it took him
long enough!
I'd also like to make a toast, please lift your glasses and drink
to absent friends."
(By Rebecca Bocchetti)
Here I stand, a brand new wife,
A happy woman with a wonderful life,
But I do just want to mention here
My Mum and Dad, whom we hold dear.
They may not be sitting here with me,
But I have no doubt that they can see,
Just how joyous a day this is
And an occasion they'd be sad to miss.
So join with me in one last toast,
To my parents, whom I still miss the most.
When my husband said to me,
That he wanted to marry me,
I knew that I was safe at last
From the demons of the past.
My Mum and Dad both loved me so
But sadly I had to watch them go.
So now that I'm a brand new wife
They'd want us to celebrate my new life.
Please raise your glasses now with me
To Mum and Dad, and my new family.
Wedding days are funny things,
They make you cry and they make you sing,
I am happier now than ever before
But I want to say a little more.
My Mum and Dad may not here
But, like angels, they see and hear.
So even if we can't be together
They, too, will remember this day forever.
So raise you glasses, and don't be sad,
This toast is for my Mum and Dad.
